Alyattes trite
« on: February 28, 2011, 07:23:16 am »
Just received but some details... I'm wondering if it's a plated coin or the shiny metal is the alloy not worn.

Here the fac photos of the coin

Unfortunately today is a rainy day so no right light to take good photos...

I think at least that probably is the electrum alloy not worn.

And what about the little holes on lion ?

Thanks to a quick sun glimpse (may be the sunburst of the coin itself :D  ? )

What's the weight and diameter?

The details are a bit muddy. And what's with that smaller lion head coin, that appears silver, next to it in the photo immediately above?

The weight of trite is 4.682g and maximum diameter is 13.0mm

The hemihekte is not silver, I think there is less % of gold and copper, here you can see the seller's pic

here a real photo

As you can see the shiny electrum depends a lot from light

The weight and diameter of the first coin are in the correct range for an ancient, non-plated electrum trite minted by Alyattes, Weidauer Type 16, c. 600-560 BC. The softness of the details and the pitting may simply be from a worn die and corrosion of the silver or copper in the gold/silver/copper alloy. I've seen softness like this in other coins of this type, such as this one from Heritage:

You are right.
Concerning the heritage trite have you seen the incuse punch marks ? Very interesting indeed.
It seems that we have more than two strucks... one bigger square and a more little rectangular struck three times...

With a lot of these, most maybe, a large incuse square is positioned right next to a slightly smaller incuse square.

Yes fot the most there are two incuses one bigger than other. But sometimes we can see the little square overposed on bigger so we can suppose that the incuses were struck in two different times.
