Cock and serpent, a rare coin from Nikopolis
« on: November 17, 2009, 06:52:38 pm »
Hi!

I think that this is a rare type from Nikopolis:

Moesia inferior, Nikopolis ad Istrum, Caracalla as Caesar, AD 196-198
AE 18, 1.97g, 17.47g
obv. MAR K[A]I - ANT[WNIN](?)
       Bust, draped, bare-headed, r.
rev. NIKOPOLIT PROC ICT
Cock, stg. r., attacking erecting serpent l.
ref. a) not in AMNG
rev. AMNG I/1, 1416 (for Severus)
       b) not in Varbanov (engl.)
1 ex. in CNG electronic auction 109, lot 84 http://www.acsearch.info/search.html?search=cock+serpent&view_mode=1&en=1&de=1&fr=1&it=1#1

The obv. legend seems to begin with MAR, then a letter with a vertical line (K?), then a space followed by an I.

This motive appears too on a coin of Appolonia Pontica. Its meaning is absolutely unclear.

Best regards
