« on: December 06, 2005, 08:32:36 pm »
Hi!

Sorry, here I have a new coin of Philipp II from Mesambria I can't attribute with the online resources. Help needed!

It is an AE 26, 13.3g:
obv. M AR IOYLIOC PHILIPPOC / KAICA / R
confronted busts of Philipp II and Serapis
rev. MECAMB - RIANWN
Ares stg. l., with shield and reversed spear

Any information highly appreciated (as always!)

Best regards

This is Varbanov 4280, citing three Bulgarian references (one of which is Moushmov 4032) and wildwinds (the latter is obviously exactly your specimen).

The coin illustrated in Varbanov is a different one, but the dies are identical.

He identifies the figure also as Athena.

Thanks, Markus, for attributing the coin. Ares was the description from the seller. I was wondering too. This was the reason I don't find the type on Wildwinds.

Best regards
