Commodus, Anazarbus; help with reverse legend requested.
« on: April 16, 2023, 04:13:05 pm »
Hi it's about this type of a Roman Province Bronze of Commodus from Anazarbus - which I would need help translating the reverse legend:

https://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/4/3653

The legend reads: ΙƐΡΟϹ ΙϹ(Ɛ) (in three lines in wreath) ΑΝΑΖΑΡΒƐⲰΝ ƐΤ ΘϞΡ

ΑΝΑΖΑΡΒƐⲰΝ = Anazarbeoun = City of Anazarbus

ƐΤ ΘϞΡ = Etoyc Theta (9) Qoppa (90) Rho (100) = Year 199 [Dated according to the Pompeian-Cilician era] = 180/181 AD

Ok, so far no problems. But I can't deal with the inner text passage right now. Or I'm just on the line - either way - I can't get any further.

ΙƐΡΟϹ ΙϹ(Ɛ) = Ieros ? ? ? ? = sacred / holy .... what?

What is meant by "ΙϹ(Ɛ)"? I really can't figure it out right now. Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Ziegler, Kaiser, Herr und städtisches Geld (also known as Ziegler, Anazarbus), pg. 110, states that it means IEROS ISELASTIKOS and thus takes reference to the iselactic games, the Hadriania Olympia, occurring in Anazarbus. Iselastic means that victors had the privilege of a triumphal entry into their home cities.

Anazarbus was obviously proud of its right to have such high-level, iselastic games.

Hope this helps.

Best

Thilo

I do not own this reference. Thanks again for the reference.

I would never have thought of it that way.

It will help! That's great. Thanks.

...

The translation is rather "of the Anazarbeans" or "of the people/inhabitants of Anazarbos" as this is a genitiv plural.
