Maxentius 2nd copy known
« on: March 18, 2023, 02:16:19 pm »
Hello,

I have this coin. Half Follis, 1.84 grs. MAXENTI-VS P F AVGVICTORIA - AETERNA AVG N/ VOT/X _ R S.
It is the 2 nd copy listed. The other one is on the book of Vincent Drost. I have two questions: is the type known with other officina and do you have a photo of the first copy?

Your coin is Drost ROME 123 = RIC VI ROMA 230/231

Drost lists 21 ex. From off. S. 5 ex. and from off.S with this particular rev. legend break - 1 ex.

Are you sure that the weight is < 2 g?  ~3 g is expected. However, Drost lists one ex. 2.02 g

Ill look at the weight tomorrow. The 1.84 grs comes from the seller and i thin it is the good weight.
Do you have a photo of the coin with this break on the legend?

No. there is no picture of it in Drost book. But this coin was sold on Elsen auction (nearly thirty years ago) so maybe the picture is in auction catalogue.

Hello,

There is also a copy of the same coin from Elsen Auction 47 1996 623. The scan is slightly better in quality.
Hope this helps.
