Ave!
Copper alloy; 52mm/14.8gm
As seen in the photo, this is a rather sophisticated buckle. Not seen, the reverse has two holed attachment lugs.
Question #1 - Is this Roman or Byzantine?
Question #2 - What is the animal? Peacock? Dragon? Something else?
HELP!
SC:
Yes, Byzantine, circa 650-700 AD, type E37 from Mechthild SCHULZE-DÖRRLAMM's, "BYZANTINISCHE GÜRTELSCHNALLEN UND GÜRTELBESCHLÄGE IM RÖMISCH-GERMANISCHEN ZENTRALMUSEUM".
Most examples have a more abstract bird, but yours appears to clearly be a peacock.
The type apparently originates in the Asia Minor part of the Byzantine empire so a peacock is not surprising.

Nice one!

Ave!
Thanks Shawn! I was rather sure it was Byzantine rather than Roman, but it's nice to know exactly!
Joe - Yeah, that's what I thought, too. The buckle and prong still swivel! Once it's finally cleaned
I'll post some further pix it anyone cares to see them.
Thanks for all,
Kevin
