Wheel coin: ancient city Istros
« on: May 08, 2022, 04:29:29 am »
I collect coins by the names: drachma, obolus, cent, jiao..
I have this coin in my collection: many sources tentatively call it "Wheel coin": https://www.dema-coins.com/2021/04/Wheel-money-ancient-greek-coin.html.

It was bought in Ukraine as an ancient Greek coin: "Histria (or Istros) — ancient Greek colony (polis) founded by Milesian settlers near the mouths of the river Danube".

Actually, my question is: lately I come across information that this is not a Greek coin (not a coin of Greek immigrants) of 6-5 centuries BC, but much later an imitation of the city of Nikonion.
If anyone has information, please tell me: is it Istria, or later imitation?
