An obv. legend variant for Severus

Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
AE 19, 2.85g
obv. AV KAI C[E] - CHVHROC
        Laureate head r.
rev. NIKOPOLIT - PROC ICTRo
Apollo, nude, chlamys over l. shoulder, stg. frontal, head l., holding bow
in l arm and in extended r. hand patera
ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not Varbanov
      c) Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2021) No. 8.14.7.10 var.
coll. Hoeft

Very carelessly cut obv. legend! Now looking at the coin in hand the 1st H of CHVHROC is only a badly cut E!

Bet regards

A new type of Tertullus for Severus

Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
AE 26, 9.94g, 225°
struck under governor Ovinius Tertullus
Obv.: AV K L - CEVHROC P
Bust, draped and cuirassed, laureate, r.
Rev.: VPA OV TERTVLLOV NIKOPOLI PR
Herakles, nude, lion's skin over l. shoulder and l. arm, stg. frontal, head r., resting
with r. hand on club and holding in l. hand bow
Ref.: a) not in AMNG:
cf. AMNG I/1, 1276 (for the type only)
         b) not in Varbanov
         c) not in Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2021):
rev. No. 8.18.14.2 corr. (same die, writes VPA OOV)
obv. e.g. No. 8.14.10.2 (different die)
         probbly unpublished
coll. Hoeft

This is now the 57th coin of Tertullus for Severus! This coin has a new obv. die and a new rev. legend variant! The rev. seems to be identical with Caracalla No. 8.18.14.2 although the depicted coin is a bit misstruck. It is another example for a parallel issue of menbers of the imperial family. The rev. legend of Caracalla should be corrected!

A correction for Diadumenian

Diadumenian, AD 217-218
AE 27, 27.29mm, 12.70g
obv. K M OPELLI DIA - DOVMENIANOC
Bust, draped and cuirassed, seen from front, bare-headed, r.
rev. VP CTA LONGEINOV NIKOPOLITWN PR / OC ICTR
Hermes, nude, stg. l., bended forwards, with r. foot on rock, l. hand with chlamys
on back, holding in r. hand lowered kerykeion
ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not in Varbanov
      c) Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2021) No. 8.25.10.7 corr. (same dies, writes  LONGINOV NIKOPOLEITWN)
flower_90703, Ebay, February 2022

This coin is in bad condition but the important parts of the legend are clearly readable.

Hands off this coin!

Caracalla, AD 198-217
AE 29, 11.25g, 210°
struck under governor Ovinius Tertullus
obv. AVΤ Μ ΑVΡ ΑΝΤWΝΙΝΟC
Bust, draped and cuirassed, seen from behind, laureate, r.
rev. VPA OOV TERTVLLOV NIKOPO ROC ICTRW
Eagle with open wings stg. frontal on thunderbolt, head with wreath in beak
       turned r.
ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not in Varbanov
      c) cf. Hristova-Hoeft-Jekov (2021) No. 8.18.1.20 (but the correct obv. is AV K M AVR!)
Heritage Auctions, 232207, Lot 63201, February 2022

The obv. legend under Tertullus is always AV K M AVR!

The seller writes: "Evidence of tooling". But in fact the coin was falsified!

Here is a new reverse legend variety for Sept Sev, struck under Tertullus, HHJ 8.14.20

Obverse reads AY.K.L.CEP.CEVHROC P
Reverse reads VLLOV.NIKOPOLI. in exergue PROC IC

Due to the edge being worn, one has to make an educated guess for the full reverse legend until a better specimen turns up, ie VPA.OOVIN.TERTVLLOV.NIKOPOLI. -> PROC IC

diameter: 25 mm
weight: 8.5 g

AMNG -
Varbanov-
HHJ obv 8.14.14.5 same die,
       rev -

Cheers,

Clueless
