Broken bronze oil lamp

(1/1)

SC:
Any further identification help would be appreciated.

Found in eastern Austria.

Strobilus2:
This copper-alloy lamp (and the fragments in your other post (yes, certainly another lamp)) is a fairly common type in the Danube region and was probably made in the 2nd-3rd centuries AD. The pierced lugs were of course intended to allow the lamp to be suspended by an arrangement of chains.

Please curate the lamp away from humidity since copper-alloy in this condition can be susceptible to 'bronze disease'.

SC:
Thanks David.  Happily these lamps have been stable for about ten years.  Both came from the junk bin/pick bin of a detectorists club.

As no "serious collector" would be interested in such items they were cheap.  I however love such bits.
