Ancient coins in Germany - question
« on: May 05, 2023, 05:33:52 am »
Dear All,

It is my first message in the forum, and would appreciate your patience in case it was already discussed. I tried to find a similar question, but since it is still unclear to me, I will open a post.

I am contemplating ancient coin collecting as a hobby, and still do not have any coin.

After reading and reading, I am more confused than anything. I am not interested in buying in Ebay, but probably in this website and perharps in CNG, but this article in the German magazine Focus made me worry if doing so could be against any applicable law:

https://www.focus.de/digital/internet/ebay/vorsicht-erdfrisch-ebay_id_2252621.html

If I buy in an electronic auction at CNG, or buy in this website, is it necessary a "lückenloser Herkunftsnachweis" (comprehensive certificate of origin) to import the coins to Germany (since I understand those websites operate outside Germany), and will I get this documentation from those websites? What do I need to verify before buying?

Many thanks for your answers.

Hi Daniel,
If no-one here is able to help, then you might try on a German collecting board:

We have shipped to Germany routinely without any special documentation.  We have not had any issues, but I do not know anything about German laws.
