Are these Cherronesus hemidrachms genuine?
« on: December 14, 2007, 06:39:21 am »
Dear colleagues,

I am trying to buy coin described "Thrace, Cherronesus. 400 - 350 BC. Silver Hemdrachm. Forepart of a lion. / Quadrapartite incuse with symbols... Fine." from known seller at ebay.com with ID : ancient_treasures ). Please, see the picture from seller.

It looks well like genuine and seller has very high rating but I am afraid if this not a forgery due to some high quantity of fakes and forgeries for this Cherronesus hemidrachms I found at:

(i) http://mriess.acm.jhu.edu/castfakes/greek.html

and (ii) www.forgerynetwork.com  items number 6787, 6786, 6785, 6779, 6777, 6776;

Why I am afraid that this seller placed 3 similar items every week during the last weeks. And now he listed three items 170178420897, 170178420884 and  170178420707. All are almost EF and looks very similar to listed forgeies at forgerynetwork.com.

Thank you in advance for any suggestion on this coin and/or ebay seller!

In my opinion this is either cast or electrotype.

I disagree. I don't think there's anything in this 1 photo to suggest that this is a cast.

Is it possible that these coins are modern struck?

Thank you for comments!

Dear Dr. Prokopov,

thank you again for continued discussion!

Unfortunately, I have no photos at the coin edge because these coins are not available for me.

These photos are only from seller store. I wanted to buy one from them but when studied that it is highly probably forgery I decided to do not.

With kind regards, Sergiy.

AS far as having a bunch of these coins for sale, I don't think that's really dispositive.  These coins seem to be pretty darn common.  I saw a dealer at the Annandale coin show who had a whole little container of them, basically a take your pick for 45 bucks.

Hello,

Could somebody be more specific as to why they think these coins are fake ?  I have bought many coins from the seller, whom I consider as reliable.  They do not seem to differ from the usual real specimens found for sale, let alone their being quite common.  I was thinking of adding one of these to my collection.

Thank you,

Pascal
