Diocletian Problem
« on: December 28, 2006, 08:44:22 pm »
I have a Diocletian coin (again found it in my safe) that is about the size of a US Dollar coin and very heavy.  (unfortunately, I have now way to weigh it).

The OBV: IM C C VAL DIOCLETIANVS PF AVG

The REV: I believe is GENIO POPVLI ROMANI

My problem is that for this Rev the Obv should be IMP DIOCLETIANVS AVG

What do I have?
Iacta alea est  - 'The die has been cast' (Julius Caesar Jan 10, 49 BC Rubicon River, Italy)

Your Obv. and Rev. is correct .with the rev legend break as GENIO POPV-L-I ROMANI. I Think the Exergue is 2 letters Probably HA or H :Greek_Delta: I'm not sure which. Making this RIC VI Heraclea 12a.Oh and its a follis These could get quite big and heavy before the reforms.
