Constantine II, RIC ref please?
« on: December 28, 2006, 12:43:24 pm »
Greetings!

This is a very pleasant coin, especially at the equivalent of about 10 dollars, but I have two references for it .. I don't (yet) have my own RIC VII, so can anyone fix the right one, please?

The seller gave: RIC VII 261, rarity R2, year 322-323.
An identical specimen on the web is given as: RIC VII 255, year 323-324.

The description is: 3.8 grammes, 18 by 19.5 mm. Obverse: Laureate, draped bust R. CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB CReverse: VOT / . / X in wreath; CAESARVM NOSTRORVM around; Q * AR in exergue.  (So it's clearly Arelate, officina 4.)

Thanks!

your coin is RIC 261 (bust laur., draped and cuirassed)

RIC 255 is just a laureate head

Victor, thanks!  Drumax, yes, I was impressed.  I am just about to put it into the COTD thread ..

I can wait until you post it in the COTD or I can drool over it here; seems you have no option.
What a lovely portrait and fine execution; Arelate keeps surprising me!
Congrats are well in order especially at the price you paid :-\

Frans - Thanks.   Actually, I was really surprised that it wasn't snapped up by someone who specialises in these.  I bid for it, not because I wanted it for some collecting focus, but  because I thought it looked so good!

Who was the seller?  I think I should contact him too!  ;)

Victor -

Thanks.  I do find Dane's tables very helpful, but often not completely so.  All that detailed work needs some good proofreading by someone else, and sometimes it doesn't get it.  Still, I should have checked there first.

In this case, the tables give two references with identical descriptions.  One is RIC VII Arles 261, and the other is RIC VII Arles 263.  As 263 is listed as R5, I would not expect to have found one, but the table alone doesn't help me decide.
