Greek UEFA Cup coin. ID needed!
« on: May 23, 2010, 01:41:12 pm »
I have had the following small greek bronze for a while and I am unable to identify it. Seeing Internazionale lift the cup yesterday reminded me of it.

The obverse seems to be a head of a female facing right. The reverse bears a Kantharos with a shaft of wheat in the background.

The coin is 15mm in diameter and weighs 1.45g. Any ideas?

Thanks, Will.

Thank you Pekka, but the Kios coin doesn't seem to fit the bill. There are no bunches of grapes on the Kantharos and furthermore I have noticed script on the bottom of the reverse which seems to terminate in an N.

After thinking on this coin for awhile,
I decide to ID it as Nicaean prize coin
of Commodus in series with reverse

It's clearly Greek though.

Hi all

@ Pekka: Do you mean something similar to this? I doubt it.

I agree with areigh that the coin is Greek and not Provincial.

I think Kios and Methymna would be two mints to do some research.

There is a rare issue from Peparethos with young bearless Dionysos on the obverse but I rather see Athena on the obverse.

@ Will Hooton: Can you confirm that it is Athena depicted on the obverse?

iolkia

No, I stumbled on this coin recently:

http://rpc.ashmus.ox.ac.uk/coins/9771/

Areich may be right. The obverse resembles
more Mithra of Kios coin than Roman emperor.

On reverse I see a palm branch behind the cup.

(This coin is presently in my "holding pattern"
wanting attribution.)

On second thought:

As Will Hooton observed, there seems to be a circular inscription on the reverse, which rules out an origin from all the mints mentioned so far.

Furthermore, I think I see traces of pellet(s) on the obverse behind the bust. Of course I am not sanguine on this, given the condition of the obverse, but if this is indeed the case, it could indicate an origin from Magna Grecia.

Regards.

If you look on the person's shoulder on the obverse, there appears to be something angled \ over the shoulder, so I wonder whether it could be this one?
Corcyra, Epirus
Head of Poseidon right, trident on shoulder
KORKYRAIWN, amphora, in it branch,
14mm
BMC Thessaly, p. 157, 617

There is also
Peparethus, Thessaly
Head of young Dionysos right, crowned with ivy
PEPARHQIWN, kantharos, beside it, palm.
19mm
BMC Thessaly, p. 53, 9; Mionnet II, p. 311, 6; Hunterian p. 460, 2

Peparethus sounds better. I doubt that
BMC authors mix amphora to kantharos.

This coin has landed from holding pattern
to data base.

Congratulations to helvetica for solving the mystery!

How silly of me not to have consulted Rogers before ruling out Peparethos because of the circular inscription.
And it had to be the only one issue from this mint with circular description :-[

It is definitely it. I will try to post an image next week:

Rogers 565, Fig. 320

Kantharos with palm at side.

Here the illustration in Rogers. I apologize for the bad quality but I think the coin is recognizable.
