Given the nail still visible i'm quite confident it's roman, I'd guess a belt mount but havn't came across a similar one.

Yes, this is half of a Roman belt plate.  It had a Y form originally.  It is a Balkan type that dates from the late 2nd to mid 3rd century AD.
