What are these objects, please?
« on: June 04, 2022, 01:56:17 pm »
Ave!

The other day a friend mentioned the Katalog der Militaria aus Vindonissa to me. Not familiar, I downloaded it and to my utter surprise
I found these artifacts in Tafel 8.

Over the years I have accumulated eleven of these silver objects but disregarded them as I could never discover their era nor use.
And still do not as my understanding of the German language is atrocious. Are they the end terminals of sword or dagger frames?

HELP!

I don't think so.  How big are they and what are they made of?

There are small silver items like this that were some form of decoration.

The shape knobs are bronze or brass and fairly large and heavy - like a hazelnut.

Ave!

Well, shoot...and here I was getting all excited.  ::)

This one is 15mm/6.0gm

They are all silver, rather small and all have the same slotted groove with remains of the original solder.
The same slotted groove with remains of the original solder is also found on these enigmatic silver ducks.

Certainly, but what did they decorate?  ???

The German translates as 'Offensive weapons - parts of sword scabbards'

They are some sort of decoration and, like you show, are associated with the duck-things.

Nothing to do with roman weapons.
