Title: Mark’s Ancient Greek Coins
Post by: Mark R1 on March 26, 2019, 01:08:57 pm
I'm new to this and started my gallery yesterday.  What a cool way to show your collection!

Tell me if I'm doing something wrong. In particular is it ok to copy and paste the coin stats and write ups for the Forum Coins I purchase? I'm not sure if Joe is cool with this or not.

Sweet lookin' gallery so far, congrats Mark

You have great coin-taste (my collection was primarily animal-coins, ships and weapons ... you seem to hunt for some of the same themes, eh?)

=> keep-up the great work!

Thanks! Yes I am attracted to weapons, animals, ships and Greek Gods. I wish the Spartans made coins instead of trading bars of iron.

Thank you! My collecting plan is to try and collect Classical Greek Coins that speak to me artistically and buy from dealers like Joe and stay off EBay. :)

Staying off eBay is very good advice for new collectors. There is no reason to go there until they have a little more knowledge. The good coins usually end up selling for almost as much as anywhere else. The bad coins seem like tempting bargains to the inexperienced. And finally, it is almost the only place where fakes are a significant percentage of what is offered.

Yes, if you know the seller, it is OK. It is very important, however, to understand that knowing the seller has nothing to do with feedback or anything you can learn on the eBay website. You must learn the seller's reputation from elsewhere.  For a new collector, I think they should be a well known ancient coin dealer or a member here. It isn't always easy to know who is reputable.  I have had collectors contact me after discovering the Fake Coin Reports and NFSL, who had purchased over and over again for YEARS from the same fake seller, a fraud they thought was reputable or even a mentor or friend.

I agree. At this moment I’m too ignorant and can’t spot fakes so I would just prefer to buy from dealers I don’t have to worry about. I’m not looking for the best deal. I’m more interested in learning and having fun and not worrying about getting ripped off.

Thanks Robin.

I don’t know what I’m doing. I’m just going for stuff that appeals to me artistically and trying to also stick with Ancient Greek coins since I find all the competing city states a nice incubator for artistic variety.

Mark,

I agree with Jay GT4's comment about how you're building your collection. Acquiring coins based upon what you find artistically pleasing is a great theme. Instead of having something that some people might consider as a simple collection of historical objects, you will have a collection of beautiful things at which to gaze and to admire.

 +++  A magnificent example.  Best-in-show.

All the devices on-flan and nicely detailed. I particularly like the light iridescent toning.

You’ve provided me with an excuse to crack open my new(ish) copy of Calciati’s Pegasi, vol I. It’s in Italian and English, and has some odd punctuation, and I am still puzzled by some of the abbreviations (e.g., Sic. and Or.). The reference to Pegasi #400 is accurate. In fact, there appear three entries for #400, one with the A monogram on the reverse (no photo), the next a reverse without the A, and the third a reverse that is a mule #401 also without the A.

Congrats Mark !!

I was following that piece, but earlier in the day was successful on a piece for my US Colonial collection from a Stack's online auction so I had to let it go.  Glad you got it!

There has been a noticeable increase in the number of those "archaic bee" style trites coming up for sale/auction recently, all with the same surface characteristics and planchet fabric.  I have to assume that a hoard was found and is being dispersed via various auction outlets.

Mark I don't think your links are in sync with your descriptions. The one above takes us to a coin from Argos, the previous one to a beautiful Seleukid.
Remember you must copy the link from the description and not the browser.

No, it's a common mistake we've all made at one point.

The browser address refers to a place in the overall Members Gallery, so whenever somebody adds a new coin that position changes. Copying from the description will always take ypu to your coin.

Nice coins btw!   :)

Geat coin of Bottiaia, Mark.  I just happened to have received my SNG Ashmolean Part III Macedonia, where it's listed as #3289.  Another reference: SNG Cop 2 (Macedonia) #136.

I have one with a ΘE monogram (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=158106). I was surprised to see that another one, similar to yours, was missing from my FAC gallery. I've now loaded that one (https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=173521) to my Macedonian page.
