Unusual Maurice Follis
« on: February 23, 2004, 01:21:10 pm »
Hi All,

This one looks like usual SB533 Maurice Tib follis from Antioch. But the legend is little different: instead P AUT at the end ,  I read P UAT.
Someone know what is the source of this difference?

Thanks,

The meaningless legends are typical for the first years of Maurice at Antioch mint and partially because of his name resemblance to the formewr emperor Tiberius II and because of the fewer and fewer people who still knew latin in Syria. Your example is a post-reform issue (besides introducing the correct legend the uncial M was replaced by a capital M). On your coin there is a simple mistake by reversing letters. Probably they just copied an old legend and didn't know any more what it stands for. This kind of errors often occur in this period.
This is an year XII from my collection.
