Is this even Byzantine??
« on: September 10, 2004, 12:29:06 am »
The imagery says Byzantine but this is not like any Byzantine I have seen??

it is 29mm and fairly thin, weighing in at just 5.3 gm.?

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks!
Jerome

Hi,

I don't think it's a coin, looks like an early religious medal. Could be byzantine but after the iconographic period.

The absence of any obverse or reverse legend also makes me think it is not a 'coin'.  Definitely Byzantine design - icons - I would vote for it being some sort of a religious medal as well.  There is no hole in is so likely not an item that was worn on a chain. Very interesting!

It's a coin...it's an anonymous follis class K dated 1081-1092 minted under Alexius I. The forum has another one on sale
