I have been collecting for 13 years since I was 19 and have a modest collection of about 300 Roman Coins mostly Silver. I also have a small Collection of Solidi and am curious why they are mostly far cheaper than Gold Aurei. For example the only Aureus I currently have is of Trajan Decius I had to pay $6000 for it and its actually very light about 3.45 Grams. My Solidi weigh more yet cost far less why this price difference.

Thanks for your answers guys.

My guess is mostly aesthetic reasons but also rarity.

  • Leave the gun, take the Canoli!
Also a name carries a premium.  People want the big Emperors like Augustus, Tiberius, Nero and Trajan and those big name Emperors minted aurei.  There also seems to be a lot more solidii out on the market at any given time.

Far fewer aurei survived than solidi.  They simply had more time to be recycled into new coinage than the later solidi did.
