Large Greek bronze ... maybe fake?
« on: July 05, 2014, 04:39:46 pm »
This is a large 27mm bronze coin I just got with a lot of mixed coins.  I can't identify it, but it appears to be Greek.

It looks like a fake to me, and has what looks like a partial seam on a small part of the edge.  I don't have my scale with me right now and can't weigh it, but it is solid and has good relief.

Any ideas what this coin is, or what it's supposed to be?

Thanks.

Stan

It looks like a cast to me.

My first impression was that this was a cast fake.  It comes from a collection that was accumulated from the 1930's through the 50's, and none of the other coins are fakes.  The man travelled around the world on business and apparently collected ancient coins as souvenirs from the places he visited.  There was even a 1597 Elizabeth I hammered silver coin in this collection.

So ... if this is a fake, which is likely ... what is it a fake of?  It is supposed to be a Greek coin of some sort, but I'd like to figure out if it is a copy of a real coin.  It can't be too recent a fake, since I believe it was acquired about 70 years ago.

Thank you, Snegovik.  Mithradates III, King of Pontos seems to be an excellent match.

Should this be posted in the fakes section?  I've never come across a fake like this before.

Just found this for an AR Tetradrachm in the fakes reports: https://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/displayimage.php?album=20&pos=962

This appears to be, except for the material, an almost perfect match for this coin.

Description is as follows:" Mithradates III, Pontic
AR tetradrachm
Diademed and draped bust right, with close beard / BAΣIΛEΩΣ MIΘPAΔATOY, Zeus entroned left, holding eagle and sceptre
Sear 7239 ... 220-185 BC. Hill #72. Sold as Rosa reproduction of Becker coin. Electro-plated silver over pewter. “Copy” stamped on rim. Image courtesy of Charlie at the Coin Replica Store."

Mine appears to be brass or orichalcum, and I can find no listing at all for this coin in anything but silver, either real or fake.  As far as I can tell, this heavy, cast metal coin is somewhat unique.  I'll take exact measurements today and get it listed as a new fake.
