Lovely patinas on the first two. As we all by now probably recognise (given how often I've discussed it on this list), the elephant type is the pig-like no-serif western version (Narbonne, and/or northern Spain) rather than the muscular elephant with serif-lettering eastern type (Marseille or elsewhere in Provence, or northern Italy).

Thanks for the comments, Andrew.
Although i know that there are strange things in the nature (inc. on the human side), I'm still perplexed at the idea of an elephant trying to reproduce with a pig - i.e already with the "technical" side of the story - !!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, again, Andrew
Must confess that I didn't pay much attention to the (potential) extent of this difference of style but I do see a lot of similarities between the "pig-type" (dated 49-48) from a Western mint (inc. down to North Spain i.e fighting the Pompeians out there) and the one minted by the Pompeians under Q. Caecilius Metellus Pius Scipio before Thapsus (i.e 1 to 2 years later) (see my gallery). Quite curious that, inc. with having living examples under their own eyes (the elephants brought by Juba I), the style is fairly similar to the Caesarian "pig-type"/Western mint one. Some kind of "porosity" between the two fighting sides ?
Best
Pierre
