Hi Bud, Hi Steve,

I got this interesting Sestertius on ebay.uk for only 30 BP because most of the viewers thought that the scratches have been made in the present I guess. But in my opinion they are original.

Thank you Bud.
In this case Hostilian is holding a wand in his right hand, not a standard. I could not find coins of this type with wand at acsearch!

Mark, thanks and congratulations to your 1000. posting ;)

Great portrait.  He's got the "Thousand Yard State" (from Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket).

Andreas,

That IS interesting, isn't it?

That's a familiar portrait but it's too early in the morning for me to place it.

Definitely not Decius, though, is it?

Andreas,

Well, as I recall there are 3 usurpers right before Decius, but I don't believe any of them look like that.

Additionally, the usurpers' coins would have been struck elsewhere, right?

Andreas,

Yes, Pacatian is the only one who might fit that description, but again, would the dies not have been in different locations? And Pacatian was not around all that long, was he? OK, his coins were all struck at Viminacium. Is it possible that Decius would reuse those dies? Experts?

I agree with Lloyd's Gallery page comment regarding the new Gordian III: A cool coin with a lot of character that begs to be held in one's hand :)

I do not think that the averse of this coin was struck with Pacatian dies.
Maybe the die-catter did not know the look of Decius and he remembered Pacatian.

Compare the busts of Philipp II. on provincial coins of Vimincacium with the portraits of Pacatian for example and you will see that they are almost equal.

Regarding the engraver/celator, that must be it :)

Love the Julia Domna and Elagabalus!

Where are you getting all these cool coins??

Good evening Mark,

most of the coins I got/get on German and French ebay. Go take a look in there, it's worth it. :)

My latest purchase from Lanz:

A Philippus I. Sestertius with outstanding and absolutly untypical portrait  (could rather be Gordian I. than Philipp Arabs).

Vividly life like portrait - just great, particularly the furrowed brow and the seemingly "we are not amused" expression! He has a distinctly portrayed air of condescension about him.
