which way is up ?
« on: November 15, 2008, 10:48:03 am »
OK, I couldn't wait.
Here is my next coin but I cant tell which way is up.
Look at the top and bottom, the letter A at both ends.
I must be seeing it wrong but to me it looks as if
the top and bottom say the same inscription.
Somebody help...pleeeease.
Thanks
 B

I think this is a double strike. So you find the "top" twice on the coin.

Does the other side show evidence of a double strike?

Thats interesting, the die or flan rotated 180 deg
and the same is written on the top and bottom?

Here is whats left of  the other side.
So,is there a proper "top"?
Thanks

I would say it is Hyrcanus II over struck at Alexander Jannaius coin, the letter that look like A is D from YHDM.

The reverse does look like Meshorer Type S, and the obverse isn't a double strike as there are enough dissimilarities in the lettering to indicate that different dies were involved. So it's a YONATAN coin overstruck (presumably) on a YEHONATAN coin. Can you see any trace of the understrike on the reverse?

Dear Robert
it is definatly double struck from the same Die look at the photo and notic the D letter posettion in both coins and the Cornocopia and the Dot under it, and the posetion from the letters above, it is surely the same die and double struck not over struck, I thought as you befor but with closer look and more study I am sure it is Double struck.

Another tough one to catalog.
See if I have this straight,
It was originally a Jannaeus coin because of the cornucopia.
Hyrcanus II came along and tried to stamp his inscription
and during the minting it became a double strike or over struck.
So,all letters visible are Hyrcanus II letters.
Is this correct?
Thanks again

No, I would cut the Jannaeus completely.  It is double-struck, not over-struck.

yes I agree with Zach, it is just Double struck, and have nothing to do with the Jannaius over struck coins.

I think we've settled that it's double struck, but I'm not sure the issue of who struck these is settled yet! TJC is ambivalent on the matter. I think there's a lot to be done on the order of Hasmonean types, much of which could potentially be settled by hoard evidence.
