Trajan Decius AE28
« on: May 08, 2008, 04:01:24 pm »
Dear members,

I am having problems with this AE 28  of Trajan Decius. Obverse is IMP TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG, draped, laurate bust right, but it isnt that thats the problem. Rather, I can't find a proper reference for this reverse:

P M S COL VIM, Moesia standing, facing left, between a lion and a bull, holding branch and cornucopiae surmounted by little Nike, which is holding a wreath and a palm, A NXII in exe.

The closest I can get is Moushmov 47, but this does not represent an accurate description of my reverse. Any pointers?

With the breaks PMS - C - OL VIM it is Jekov/Hristova Kat.No.51, rated R8 of 10 (= 5 to 10 known specimens). Not in AMNG!

Best regards

Moushmov 47 gets a sketchy description as always, but how is it at odds with your coin's description?

47 Moesia standing between a lion and a bull, holding the cornucopiae and a little Nike, which is holding a wreath and a palm.

Hi Archivium,

The description in moushmov seems to omit the branch in Moesia's right hand, otherwise the descripiton would be accurate. It is possible that this may be an omission arising from the translation?

Jochen, as always......I owe you a beer!

For Viminacium issues: forget Moushmov - use Helveticas list and Pick-Martin references.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/dane/moesia.xls

Viminacium in Moesia Superior, Trajan Decius, 250-251 AD.,
Æ Sestertius (27-29 mm / 17.34 g),
Obv.: IMP TRAIANVS DECIVS AVG , radiate, cuirassed bust of Trajan Decius right, seen from behind.
Rev.: PMS C-OL VIM / AN XII , Moesia standing between a lion and a bull, with her raised right hand, holding branch; in her left hand holding a cornucopia with a little Nike on top, Nike is holding a wreath above Moesia´s head and a palm.
Pick (AMNG) 130 ; Martin 3'23'1 .

From my coin database.

(and i also need a beer)

Hallo Arminius!

On my AMNG I/1, 130 the break is PMS C - OL VIM and not PMS - C - OL VIM!  ???

Best regards

Pick wrote in his desription of no. 130:

"P M S ClOL VIM u. i. A. AN X[II] ...

- with a separation mark " l " (like in the nick name of our dear expert curtislclay ).

In our moderm times written descriptons are out of time and are likely to cause misunderstanding.

Even in sans serif, the separation and the lc l are not the same.  Still, I am not fond of sans serif.  Pat L.
