Cilbanoi Inferiores - Lydia, Hadrian
« on: April 20, 2008, 03:48:23 pm »
Coins of Nicaea (Cilbanoi Inferiores) in Lydia seem to be scarce - no entry in wildwinds?

Maybe someone has seen a reference or has more information about this big orichalcum denomination of Hadrian:

Nicaea (Cilbanoi Inferiores) in Lydia, Hadrian, 117-138 AD.,
Æ31 (30-32 mm / 19,44 g),
Obv.: [AVTO?]K AVΓOVCTOC - AVP AI AΔPIAN[OC?] , laureate, draped bust of Hadrian right.
Rev.: KIΛBIANΩN - [TΩN?] ΠЄPI NЄI-K[AIAN?] , Zeus(?) seated left, holding patera, eagle at his feet, Nike standing behind on low basis, crowning Zeus with wreath.
Sear GIC - ; coinarchieves - ; wildwinds - ; asiaminorcoins.com - .

Historia Nummorum cites a type for Nicaea/Lydia: "Goddess seated before naked Apollo and crowned by Nike standing on eagle (Num. Zeit., xx, Pl. I. 17)"

thanks and regards

Same reverse-type at least (brief description from Isegrim; your own obverse description looks right, and it's hard to imagine that Imhoof would just have misread it):

PRO: LYDIA
PO : CILBIANI
PZ : Between 161 and 180
TIG: PERI NEIKAIAN
 Obverse
VSG: A KAIS AYRHLIOS
VT : PORTRAIT MAN R / MARC AUREL
VA : BEARD / CLOTHES
 Reverse
RSG: KILBIANWN TWN PERI NEIKAIAN
RT : PERSONS 2 / MAN SITTING L(1) / ZEUS(1) / BIRD / EAGLE / WOMAN WALKING L(2) / NIKE(2) / ON / GLOBE
RA : THUNDERBOLT(1) / WREATH(2) / BRANCH PALM(2)
 Technical details
M  : AE
GR : 33(1)
 Bibliographical references
ZIT: IMHOOF GRM S120,1(1) / COLL IMHOOF(1)
 Additional remarks
FR : VS: A KAIS AYRHLIOS RS: KILBIANWN TWN PERI NEIKAIAN

How exciting!  Once I got one from Ano Kilbianoi, but a Trajan.  And I haven't seen any for sale from either the upper or the lower town ever since.  One of my oldest coins (from 2000); it was what taught me to expect to learn a whole world of geography in Asia Minor.  But, though I've looked, I've never found one from Kato Kilbianoi--and here you have one.  Pat L.
Here's mine (00 in the date means that it took me so long to identify it that I'd forgotten the month):
•00 VII 00a  AE20  Trajan  Laureate head to r.  N]ER TR    AIANOS SE  Rev.  Tyche with rudder to l.  Legend preserves parts of KILBIANION TON ANO, which Sear GIC lists, p. 603, Cilbiani, in Lydia, where indeed it appears on Map 5.  But he lists no coins of Trajan there under Trajan, nos. 1016-1033 being Lydia.

I was really surprised finding no entry for Cilbanoi Inferiores in wildwinds and only "a handfull" in coinarchieves.
(After all my 7 specimens also aren´t that much for 20 years collecting.)

Thanks!

These two coins should be communicated to Michel Amandry for RPC Nerva-Hadrian!

Nice coin! I could not find it in my books either, although BMC lists two specimens with the same obverse. Books checked: BMC Lydia, SNG Aulock, SNG Leypold, SNG Righetti, Lindgren I+III, Imhoof-Blumer KM.
