Possibly Gallienus?
« on: May 03, 2022, 07:23:34 pm »
Anyone have any thoughts. The closest I can find (but I haven't found the exact coin yet), is Gallienus. NI KA is Nicaea Mint. Then there is this on the side with the Bust.  Γ ΠOYB ΛIK EΓNA ΓAΛΛHNOC AYΓ

I also can't figure out the back. Maybe Concordia?

Thanks  Tom

Dear Tom and Board,

Good reading/deciphering skills!  Yes, you have nailed the correct mint and emperor.  As for the exact type, I found this entry in (the old new) Isegrim:

   1. Coin description(8305) (bookmark)
   Place and time
Area:   AM
Province, Region:   BITHYNIA
Place of minting:   NICAEA
Minting period:   Between 253 and 268<253/255>
   Obverse
Legend(G):   G POYB LIK EGNA GALLHNOS AYG
Legend(G):   Γ ΠΟΥΒ ΛΙΚ ΕΓΝΑ ΓΑΛΛΗΝΟΣ ΑΥΓ
Type:   PORTRAIT MAN R / GALLIENUS
Attributes:   RADIATE
Countermark:   ROUND<1> / LET D<1>
   Reverse
Legend(G):   NIKAIEWN
Legend(G):   ΝΙΚΑΙΕΩΝ
Type:   WOMAN SITTING L(1) / HOMONOIA(1) / ON / STOOL
Attributes:   PATERA(1) / POLOS / CORNUCOPIAE(1)
Symbols in the field:   BRANCH PALM
   Technical details
Metal:   AE
Weight (g):   9.34(1) / 11.02(2) / 11.18(3) / 8.88(4)
Die-axis:   01(2-4)
   Bibliographical references
this coin:   SNG AUL 727(1)
from the same dies:   SLG KOELN UNI I 227(2) / SLG KOELN UNI I 228(3) / SLG KOELN UNI I 229(4)
   Free text
additional remarks:   VS: G POYB LIK EGNA GALLHNOS AYG RS: NIKAIEWN

Looks like a decent match to me!  Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Tom,

Another, and more "primary" reference, is Rec Gen 839.

I am working on a reference work to replace Rec Gen.  Although your coin is relatively common, it is not common to find it in this grade.  Would you be kind enough to provide a photo on a white background (in focus) with weight and diameter, so I may use it for my book?

Thank you,
