I just added this amazing bronze age (8th-5th century BC) Italic dolphin fibula!

It's now probably the oldest thing I own.  Pin is missing but it is exquisite!

Thanks!

Just got my first silver MFB didrachm in the mail!  Jet black toning in hand with a wonderful style.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-145643

The deposits could probably be removed with some patience but it's great as is!

Not sure if the attribution is correct.  HN Italy 571 is Nymph head right while mine is left.  It also has a cithara? behind her head.  I'm thinking HN Italy 586?  Any help...Thanks

Are you sure it is a cithara and not a tripod?  If tripod, then Sambon 517. I have no record of one with cithara, but I don't have my catalog in front of me, just Sambon.

Thanks Nick!  I'm just going by what HJB had on the tag and the listing.

I don't think it's a tripod, it almost looks like a hippocamp turned sideways.  Unfortunately I don't have any books for these.

Thanks guys, I think you're right, it does look like the top of a tripod.  If that's the case, what would be the correct reference?

Thanks Peter!

I've tried to find Sambon 517 online but have come up empty!  Nothing on acsearch, cng or Nick's MFB site.  Is 517 a rare issue?

It is listed on my site but no pic.  I'll check my written catalog, which is much more extensive, tomorrow.

Unfortunately, I do not have a pic in my catalog, just my homemade place holder (attached).  I haven't seen the Glasgow or BMC coins, which Sambon lists (also attached).  So, I might ask for yours for Potamikon II!

These later types will probably say "winged nymph/Nike," since it was probably during this time that the symbol was moving from chthonic nymph/victory over death to a more general victory (strategic).

Hi Jay,

Nice coin!!! :)

Welcome to the MFB club!!!

And yes, it is a pleasant surprise to discover that a coin you recently received is actually much rarer than you thought, where the dealer mis-attributed it and under-estimated its rarity.

That is a symbol that is missing from my extensive Neapolis didrachm collection.

Hi Jay and folks,

In case you are wondering, this is a Neapolis didrachm with a lyre/kithara symbol (first coin):

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/meepzorp/gi_camp_neap_ar05.htm

I also have an example of Sambon 516 (third coin in that page), which immediately precedes your coin in Sambon.

Hi Jay,

I have another reference for you for your MFB coin:

SNG ANS ---

I looked in SNG ANS. Your coin is not in it. SNG ANS 407 is Sambon 516. SNG ANS 408 is Sambon 518. Sambon 517 is missing from that reference book.

SNG ANS has an almost complete set of Neapolis didrachms. For a Neapolis didrachm to not be in it, it must be quite rare. Based on what I've seen so far, I'd say that your coin is at least Very Rare (R2). It may even be Extremely Rare (R3).

One must also consider that Nick has no photo on file of this issue for volume #2 of his MFB reference book. Yours is the first photo he has come across.

To state that you "got lucky" would be the understatement of the century. And this is your first MFB coin!!! :)

The dealer didn't realize what he had.

Thanks Meep!  Surprising considering who the dealer was!  As Nick mentioned there is one in Glasgow and BMC but no images!
