Wanted to share this Vespasian denarius minted in Antioch that I received today.  It was erroneously listed as Rome mint but there is no denying the crude Antioch eastern style!

Being able to spot these Flavian Antiochene denarii is a good skill to have - you will be rewarded with some rare specimens purchased at decent prices.

From just down the road from where I'm from comes a drachm from the Bretti, 2nd Punic War issue.  Great reverse and I love the snake:

Fits in perfectly with the so-called "Hannibal's Bridge" at the bottom my town!

also added this Domitian denarius with a fantastic reverse:

The Corinthian helmet is exceptionally engraved however a real Corinthian helmet would never lie as it does.  Notice the relation between the ear holes and the cheeck guards, the helmet is shifted for artistic value.

both nice coins Jay, but i particularly like the Brettii issue.

the Second Punic War was a truly fascinating period in time, one of those focal points which changed the course of the whole world. imagine if it had gone the other way, a very real possibility!
i once read that the development of Italy, and even the entirety of Europe, was altered right through the Middle Ages by Hannibal's devastation of the Italian peninsula. what a huge concept to wrap one's mind around!

well done buddy,
~ Peter

Along with the "O" mint Domitian above I also added another Athens Owl tetradrachm.  Beautifully struck and centered it has great "as found" or at least very old toning.  It could be cleaned up and made shiny but I just love them when they have dark toning.  Much nicer in hand

Hi Jay,

I like your owl and would leave it as it is.

I have several shiny ones which regrettably were cleaned by a previous owner. Below is one such example. Shiny is horrible in my opinion for these and most other ancients.

Thanks guys.  Nice coin Peter!  I have no intention of cleaning it.  They're only original once!  Most of my collection is now made up of dark toned coins.
