Strange Constans II tremissis (possible fake)
« on: March 21, 2015, 06:33:21 pm »
Strange coin from a collector. It looks like a tremissis of Constans II but the style is low and the legend of obverse is unpublished. Sadly i have no metric information about weight and size. Any idea? I suspect this could be a fake.

I know little about these types, but I do know that (genuine) Byzantine tremisses often exhibit a crude style.

I think there are 2 strange things in this coin:

- Unrecorded legend. As far as  i know Constans II tremisses bear legend calling him CONSTANTINUS, except for some issues of Rome where it is COSTANTI, but the style is different
- Cruder style than usual.

Any other idea?
