Title: New Constantinian Gallery
Post by: Ben V. on June 12, 2021, 05:09:32 pm
After going through a large quantity of uncleaned coins, I've finally decided to start purchasing nice examples of some of the emperors I'm most familiar with. I'm also a sucker for nice color, so I'm definitely attracted to the "desert patina" effect. I'm hoping to grow this collection and branch out into other eras with time, but this seemed like a reasonable and affordable start.

I agree with you about the desert patina. Great start to your gallery, i.e. great coins. I look forward to further additions.

Well, I splurged and bought one more, I've always enjoyed the design. The reverse is weak (and most of the mint mark has been cut off), but the obverse is incredible. The seller listed it as Constantinople mint, so I'm trusting their expertise.

but the obverse is incredible.

And Constantinopolis has helmet with plume which is not-so-common variety.

Added a Constantius II, no desert patina on this one, but it's a perfectly centered strike and gorgeously clean surfaces.  I'm constantly surprised at the quality of affordable coins of this era.

Glad to see a new gallery, and a fine start so far Ben, congratulations!
Might I suggest that you add a link to your gallery page as a signature? That makes it much easier to access.

And welcome to Forvm!

Added a Crispus to the collection, and I think this may be one of my favorites. The surfaces are a smooth chocolate brown, and the entire legend is clearly legible on both sides.  I'll admit, early on in this set I was drawn to the desert patina coins, but this one and the Constantius II may have swayed me back to clean surfaces.
