Anyone know what this is?
« on: January 05, 2012, 08:44:26 pm »
Hi all.  I got this in a batch of uncleaned coins and have no idea what it is.  I am happy to research the specifics myself, but I have no idea where to start.  Hopefully someone can at least point me in the right direction.  It is 17 mm across and weighs 2.4g.  I like the portraits on the obverse, but I have no idea what is shown on the reverse.  There is very little contour on the coin and the sand is starting to wear so thin that I don't want to try taking any more of it off.  Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Justin

Hi,

It is a Nabataean coin.  It is not my area of expertise, so someone else might be able to identify the King.  I might be Aretas, but which one I am uncertain.

Best,
Edward

Awesome!  Thanks for the help.  I have never heard about Nabataeans, should be fun looking into this.   ;D

I think I see Gamilat in the second line on the reverse:
