Possible Cast Domitian Dupondius
« on: May 04, 2022, 04:21:37 pm »
I had been watching the coin below in an auction, and was planning to bid on it.  Last night upon closer inspection, I see what to my eyes could be a casting sprue (highlighted).  The rest of the coin doesn't appear to show any telltale signs of being a cast.

Because of this, I decided not to bid on it.  (The  auction has ended.)

Any thoughts or comments?

Looks struck and ancient to me. The "casting sprue" might just be an oxide deposit on the edge.

Thanks Curtis.  As I mentioned, everything else about the coin looked fine.  I was just a little concerned about that one area.
