FORVM vs. Forum
« on: April 20, 2009, 07:23:19 pm »
I have heard some very interesting attempts at pronouncing FORVM over the years.  Of course our regular members know it is Forum with the Roman version of U.

The V for U should only be used when FORVM is written in all caps.  Usually the name should be written as Forum Ancient Coins.

I generally use Forum. But if I'm on another forum I may say Forvm.

FORVM is better than Forvm.  But really it isn't a big deal.

I only was concerned lest you wished to keep the -vm for the Store.  I like using the pre-modern spelling, and it distinguishes us from an infinite-seeming number of other forums, lists, groups, etc.  So I'll write forvm, if I may.  Pat L.

Capital letters on the internet always seems like shouting to me. But I'm sure you wouldn't mind us shouting the name of your store, would you?  ;D

Capitals seems more correct to me, since the Romans hadn't actually invented lower case.

I always write 'FORVM Ancient Coins' in my files and cards, so I guess I'm following the "style guidelines"!

When you write ONE word in capital letters, you're just emphasizing it. Only WHEN YOU WRITE A FULL SENTENCE IN CAPITALS IT MEANS YOU'RE SHOUTING, since it would make no sense to emphasize each single word. So I think writing FORVM is a good way to clarify things, especially in German where the word for an internet discussion board (about whatever, be it train spotting, Western riding or snooker) is Forum.

Capitals seems more correct to me, since the Romans hadn't actually invented lower case.

They used cursive in their day to day business writings, which was the origins of our lower case so you can't say that they hadn't invented it. They didn't use it for monumental inscriptions just as we don't use "joined up writing" for equivalent inscriptions today.

Thank you, Alex!  I had written to the same effect, but then I was aware that I couldn't date the cursive that I had in mind (and I ought to have remembered that there is some of it in some of the political scribbles from Pompeii's wall).  So I cancelled what I had written.  I knew for Early Medieval: VERBVM, VENEREM and uerbum, uenerem, which is why the OUP NT, Vulgate, prints it that way.

Also, the famous Vindolanda tablets from the fort near Hadrian's Wall were all written in cursive. The tablets actually pre-date the wall having been written around A.D.97 to 103.

Also, when you're referring to this forum part of the FORVM website, saying "the FORVM forum" is less confusing than "the Forum forum". ;)
