Problematic Solidus
« on: November 16, 2020, 06:53:01 am »
Hello,

im working on Honoria's coins and found this one: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=3350443 . Is not in RIC X (or i missed something). The RIC 2053 ref given by the auction house is wrong. RIC 2053 is for semissi coins within wreath and undertermined mint because of the only COMOB. Or here, it is a R V coin therefore for Ravenna.
I dont like its appearance and suspect a fake. Many scarce and small issues share dies with other emperor or empress, here is not the case, which add more doubts about its authenticity.

Yes, it's a fake using a reverse from a fake Galla Placidia solidus (=1333, under Honorius). Here's a specimen of the Placidia solidus that has the same reverse die as this one. The style is the obvious give away even without the die link and mismatched reverse, as you note.
