Julian II solidus fake?
« on: January 03, 2007, 05:39:19 am »
This coin was bought by my father about 15 years ago. It was bought as auntentic to a jeweller but i see the portrait odd and want to ask yours opinions about it. The coin weights 4,5 gr.

Thanks in advance.
Ignacio.

Holla,

My first impression: authentic (but i´m no expert on these and it´s difficult without the coin in hand).
The weight is also ok.
Compare:

Julian II, as Caesar (AD 355–361). AV solidus (4.44 gm). Antioch. D N IVLANV—S NOB CAES, bare-headed, draped, cuirassed bust of Julian II right / GLORIA REI PVBLICAE, Roma and Constantinopolis enthroned, holding between them shield adorned with star, SMANZ in exergue. RIC 167. Cohen 22. Depeyrot 10/2. Rare.

Is that an obverse die match?

Yes, and the reverses look very similar (though not a die match) as well.  Thge style is good, though.

Wow, that looks like a good point for authenticity.

Many thanks, it´s really good news.  :)

Well it´s clear that my father has more experience than me. He always will be better. ;D. Tomorrow i´ll talk to him and i´ll recognize i still have too much to learn.

Ignacio.
