greek coin two crescents
« on: December 04, 2022, 11:29:27 am »
hello,
i have this greek coin but i can't identify it. I see athena wearing a helmet and two crescents, maybe some letters between the moons. I was thinking of some city in Apulia, like Samadi, but I found three and four crescents.
diam: 12mm
w: 1,4gr

thanks!

Hi lr,

It may be this coin:

https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=1589275

If that is your coin, then it is a Very Rare (R2) coin. There is only one specimen listed in acseaerch.com.

Yes, it is this type: http://www.magnagraecia.nl/coins/Bruttium_map/Kroton_map/descrKroAtt_514.html
As can be seen the reverse of the coin here has to be turned clockwise by 90 degree.

A reference is also BMC Italy, p. 219, 486: https://archive.org/details/in.ernet.dli.2015.279266/page/n229/mode/2up
but with an unsufficient description. It is this coin in the BM: https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/C_1840-0217-122
