Constantine unlisted
« on: September 07, 2022, 03:04:23 am »
Hello,

Here is another coin which seems unlisted with the dot in middle field. If you have a reference tell me.

O/ CONSTANTI - NVS MAX AVG

R/ GLOR - IA ERXERC - ITVS /  :dot: _ CONSH

I may be wrong but I think the dot is just a centering mark and your coin is still RIC 59

Another example here: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=9296017

You are right. It is a centering dot with no meaning.

Could you give an example of an issue you have in mind - with nice big dot in the exact center of the pearl ring.

As you can see it's ARLES 376 and only dot inside the wreath counts. The second dot is a centering dot, not mentioned in RIC.

Yes but its troubling to see a so large dot be a centering dot.

Don't you think that it would be unreasonable to plan a dot in mintmark which could be easily confused with centering dot? If you really need a dot then why not to move it down a bit.

Thats true but i did think that there was possibility this dot was an issue dot. Some of them are so large. I dont know, maybe its mad but i have a little doubt.

Some of them are so large.

But in the same issue also some of them are rather small. However, it's good to have doubts. Nearly nothing in ancient numismatics is certain for full 100%.

What is the proof that those dots are centering dots? Is there some works around?

They are called centering dots because they are exactly in the same place (center of the pearl ring) in many different issues.
