Virgil H Gallery
« on: July 16, 2022, 12:25:22 am »
So, I just started my gallery, and I am trying to figure it out. I am starting with my Elymais coins of which I have 26 at present (including duplicates). First two are up.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=176442

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=176441

I am trying to keep these pretty concise and not including a lot of historical info. I am a bit torn on this, because I like it when people include it, but for now less seems to be better.

Thanks,
Virgil

Hi Virgil,

Nice to see another gallery being added to FORVM.

I must point out though that the browser links to your coins that you provided are unstable, you should use the links as described here. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=73909.0

I have adjusted the links to your coins in the post above for you.

Thanks for all the great comments and to Alex for fixing the links and telling me about how to get the proper links. I was wondering about that when I pasted in the long links.

Thanks Robert, I love your Elymais gallery.

I have added a few more, working in order:

One Uncertain Early Arsakid King Drachm:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=176445

Five Kamnaskires-Orodes Drachms

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=176446

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=176451

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=176452

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=176453

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=176454

Couple of questions for you more experienced folks:

1. Do you change subject when adding new coins?

2. How do you put gallery in your signature block at bottom of posts? I looked at profile and coundn't find this, yet see people with things in their signature block at bottom of posts.

Thanks and, as always, if you see errors, please let me know. I always want to know if I have something wrong.

Virgil

I just have a running thread with all my latest additions.

To add the gallery link to the bottom of your replies go to your profile, and near the bottom you'll see a 'signature' box. Just type your message or add your link there.

In this case you need to use the link from the browser rather than the description. Yours should be...

Hope this helps,
~ Peter

Continuing to enjoy the uploads, and have the gallery bookmarked. Some thoughts about a few of the van't Haaff citations:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=176446
You’ve got this as a VH 12.3.1-1B. Are you sure there is only a single crossbar on the anchor? Almost looks like there might be a faint remnant of a second crossbar - which, if so, would of course prompt an adjustment to the VH number. Might be worth getting this one under a loupe to check.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=176451
You have the coin listed as VH 12.3.1-2A1. I might have listed it as 12.3.1-2B1 since at least some of the side tufts appear to be directed more horizontally than upward.

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pid=176441
You’ve got this one listed as VH 10.3.1-2A. Given the fact that the reverse bust – though crude – is still legible as a bust, and that the reverse legend is still orderly (forming a box, more or less, around the bust), I probably would have called it a VH 10.3.1-1B.

Hi Robert,

Thanks so much for the comments. I will look at all three again. On the one with possibly two crossbars, I did consider this and it seems like the higher the magnification (I have a microscope and also a magnifying glass), it looked to me more and more like an artifact rather than a crossbar, plus I couldn't see any connection between the top bar and the rest of the anchor. This is from memory and I will for sure give it another look. To me, the photo looks more like two crossbars than in hand, but all your comments have merit. I do find identification of some of these quite difficult. I have one I haven't posted yet that I just couldn't get past the top level, so coded it 16.1 instead of 16.1.X.X.

The one with the upward versus horizontal tufts I also spent a lot of time on and will relook this one, as well. Again, your comment has real merit. The third one with the bust, I don't recall as well, that one was identified by the seller and I accepted it after looking at the book, but will revisit. The other two I had no van't Haalf numbers to start with and I am trying to use VH for all of my Elymean coins as Sear Greek Imperial is pretty flaky with some of these and those are the only two references I have in hand.

Thanks so much for your thoughts on these, I didn't realize how useful having a gallery could be to me in terms of correcting attributions.

Regards,
Virgil

Because of a discussion in another thread, I decided to add this Roman Republican AR Denarius of C. Antestius. I love this one and have very few Republican coins. I bought this one because it is so beautiful and has a dog that looks like my girl. I will go back and finish the Elymais coins before moving on to other categories. I also want to do a better photo of this one at some point.

I sure hope your girl doesn't read this!

(LOL. I'm hoping your "girl" is, literally, a canine.)

Looking good so far Virgil.  I would siggest you may want to add a reference number to each coin's title from whatever your primary reference material is.  This will allow you to sort your gallery in a logical way once the number of coins grows.  If you click on my signature gallery link and look at my septimius severus gallery, you'll start to see why adding reference numbers and sorting by title alphabetically makes the gallery much easier to navigate.  The reference books ten do group by mint and year of production within a mint, so they coins would appear chronologically when sorted.

Also, when I click on your Elymais gallery, I'm getting all the Elymais coins on forum, not just yours.  Under your gallery preferences, you need to delete any keywords you added - it's drawing other members' coins into your gallery.

Ron,
Thanks so much for your comments. I was wondering about the order of coins. Also, I didn't realize keywords acted like that. I will go in and adjust things when I get time later and before I add any more. I really appreciate the advice.

To organize my gallery I use the "Position' setting located in the blue box you can find at the top right corner of each category.
You will have to assign each entry a position when you upload the file, but after that it will always appear in that position. No need for complicated codes or numbering schemes. I honestly have never understood why more people don't use this simple option.

OK, so this is driving me crazy. I removed all the keywords, but when I click on my Elymais album, I am still getting everyone else's coins in the listing. This would be great if I were looking for all Elymais coins, but totally not OK when looking at my own gallery and specific album. This has to be something really simple, but I am not seeing it. I just added a couple coins and checked, and the worst thing is I see everyone else's coins except my own.

This is a tad more complicated than I thought. Or I am more of an idiot than I thought. LOL.

Thanks,
Virgil

At this point, this is a deal breaker for me, when I click on my own album, none of my own coins show up until the bottom of the page of results (and there are a lot of results). I know there is a way to just see my own coins because I accidently saw it once. LOL. I can't replicate that now.

Are you using the link from the description rather than from the browser?
The fact is there have been a LOT of glitches in the Gallery ever since the upgrade, so maybe this is another one.

Compare the settings for your roman republican gallery to your elymais gallery. The Roman one is displaying properly.
