A great pair of coins with a huge history behind them.

Here is my Herod the Great along with a little bit of the history behind the possible meaning of the Year 3, monogram and helmet that you might find interesting.

Very nice coins indeed! Scholarship has it that Herod was a Nabataean that converted to Judaism (see Kasher, Retso, and Losch). The Nabataean king Malichus I played a part in the drama between Herod, Antigonus, and the Romans. I have a page concerning this history on my website - this page includes a link to Josephus' full account of the matter...

I'll add one of my coins of Malichus I to this interesting thread...

That's right. He tried to gain legitimacy by marrying Mariamne, a Hasmonean, and rebuilding the Temple in grand style, but it didn't work.

Nemonater,
I'm curious about your proposal that "year 3" would be Herod's third year as tetrarch, 40/39 BC.
Is the idea that he minted this coin in Galilee prior to the Parthian invasion?

There are multiple possible dates, and it's not clear which is correct. I could email a paper of Adam Marshak's on the date of the dated series if you're interested.

In my gallery, under the dated coins of Herod I, I have this comment:

The dating of these coins is subject to debate. Some say that because Herod was appointed Tetrarch of Samaria by Marc Antony in 42BC, that "year 3" would correspond to 40/39BC.  Others feel that because Herod was appointed King of Judaea by the Roman Senate in 40BC, that "year three" should then represent 37BC.  In all reality, the debate will most likely never be settled conclusively, one way or the other.

That paper would be appreciated.

Ariel and Fontanille maintain that 38/37 BCE was the year of the minting. They argue that the coins were minted right before Herod's capture of Jerusalem at a travelling mint. They reject Meshorer's hypothesis that the dating starts from Herod's tetrarchy since inter alia Herod's tetrarchy may have in fact begun in 41/40 BCE, reference to Herod's tetrarchy after his coronation would have offended the senate and during this time in Herod's career, he was "not as self-confident as Meshorer made him out to be." (pp. 90-92)

They later suggest the monogram on Herod's earliest coins were the mark of some mint magistrate (pp. 124-126).
