Melqart/Tyche - tough one
« on: January 07, 2009, 02:55:57 pm »
What can you folks make of this one.  Has been a rather tough nut to crack for me so far  ???
I've flipped SNG Cop for Syria and Phoenicia, also searched around.
Perhaps point me towards cities (other than the usual ones) that used THS IEPAS in their legends.

Thanks!

We seen a possible Dhmth etc too, but thought about the male name only, and thought "naah".

But there seem to be a (very rare) Demetrias city in Phoenicia. Not in Cop or BMC, I am digging and will post updates.

Found it in BMC Syria p. 289, 1, city of Demetrias (although it modernly is considered South phoenician?) obv described as Demetrius III of Syria
Not in Spaer.
I would venture to say it still looks more like a Tyre style Melqart...

Here I found a similar coin in the net:

Description of the seller:
COELE-SYRIA, DAMASCUS AS 'DEMETRIAS'. c. 95-85 BC.
Bronze , 21mm, 8.89 g.
Obv. Male head, r., possibly that of Apollo.
Rev. Tyche seated, l., on rocks.
cf. BMC. 1, where the obverse portrait is identified as that of the Seleucid King Demetrius III.. An unusual and interesting coin

Best regards
