Roman Provincial ID requested (5)
« on: January 02, 2009, 08:49:27 am »
My fifth coin shows a young Geta; bust, laureate, draped and cuirassed to the right with Latin text of which I can only make out .OR.E - GETA..
reverse: (MVNICIP) STOBENS.... a towering Nike to the left.
22 mms.
Full text and a reference would be most appreciated.

These are rare, worn, and unrepresented in the major collections.  No surprise, these are both unlisted dies,  Of Josifovski's 13 specimens, only two represent Geta as Augustus so this coin was produced about 209-210 AD.  Of the few specimens we do have, the obverse legend is normally P SEPTI GETA PIV AV or IM C P SEPTI GETA PIV AV.  I'm having a hard time trying to fit either to your coin.  Nice to see this one!

Nice to get such a response! I made some additional pics from various angles, but the beginning of the text remains obscure, I'm afraid.

Yes, I think it is the best we can do at the moment; I dare not give the area an extra cleaning.
We'll just have to wait for a second specimen 8)
I bought the coin for the portrait, but now it is worth much more to me.
Thanks for your effort!

Regards,

Frans
