Help with a simple GLORIA EXERCITVS
« on: October 28, 2008, 04:42:59 pm »
This one was a heavily encrusted coin that has been in distilled water about 6 months.  The reverse is easy:
GLORIA EXERCITVS two soldiers standing either side of one standard.

The obverse appears to be CONSTANS but I can't make out the last half.  Seems to be VOAV?  but that doesn't work.  Tried looking in VanMeter and in Helvetica's but nothing seems to fit.  Can someone see what I can't?  Should be easy enough.  Thanks!

Robert in hand it looks like CONSTANS. I can see the top and bottom of the "S" but it wouldn't be the first time I see something that isn't there.

As far as the ex. unfortunately not yet.  I've put it back in for a soak before I start brushing some more.

I don't claim to be an expert on these, but the vast majority of these have DN CONSTAN - S not CONSTANS - .

I think I see -VS- on the right, so it's a question of whether the space allows for -IN- or only -I- .

Me either, that's my problem!  :D  But there definately is no DN.  It starts with CONSTAN...

Something like this:

Possibly.  Is there a CONSTANS PF AVG with a GLORIA EXERXITIVS reverse?

Yes, the first index entry for that obv legend is a GE type at Trier, and it presumably occurs at other mints, I am not about to go through all the index entries to check!
