Need help fully attributing Caurausius Antoninianus

(1/1)

Ron C2:
I have this Carausius antoninianus.  It's a RIC 1C obverse type, IMP C CARAVSIVS P F AVG, bust, radiate, draped and cuirassed, right.

The reverse is MONETA AVG, Moneta stg. l. holding scales and cornucopiae with absolutely no mint marks in either field or exergue.  I looked at the exergue under a lot of magnification and there is no room for a mark here based on the contour of the border and there does not appear to have ever been a marking in this spot.

Cohen lists this type as C.175.  But I cannot find its equal in RIC Vb.  The two closest coins are (I think):

- RIC 284 (page 488), but it would have a S/C in the fields and a C in exergue.
- RIC 470 (page 503), but it would have S/C in the fields with no exergue.

I also considered unattributed Moneta coins RIC 854 to 866 (pages 533 and 534), but none have a 1C obverse.

I know I am not mis-reading the obverse under an 8X loupe, it's very clearly the 1C type.

Is it possible this coin is simply not in RIC Vb? Or am I missing something?

Hello Ron,
you have given us a tough nut to crack.
I had already seen your thread for a week, but unfortunately hadn't had the time to
take a closer look at it.
I read the obverse just like you do.

So far this is the only available option that I have found.
There is a note on an identical piece on Wildwinds.

mauseus:
Hi,

I've collected Carausius a long time and RIC V is woefully out of date for the coins of the period. There are so many missing types and varieties. There is no suitable single reference until we have Sam's revision of RIC that is hopefully coming shortly.

I have nearly 400 coins in my Forum gallery (about 80% of my collection), including a similar, but poorer, example that I have described as:

Carausius 287-93AD
Antoninianus
Obv "IMP C CARAVSIVS PF AVG"
Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right
Rev "MONETA AVG"
Moneta stg left holding cornucopia and scales
Unmarked mint
RIC - (cf 854ff)

Regards,

Mauseus

Ron C2:
Thanks guys, that's about what I figured. Not in RIC.

Anyone know of an alternate reference for it, or is Cohen's generic catalogue number the best I can expect until ric 5 is updated?
