Gewellt?
« on: October 15, 2018, 11:19:13 pm »
Hello all

I've come across the term "gewellt" in a lot description. The Google translation is "corrugated", which makes no sense to me.

Does "gewellt" mean the same as tooled or re-engraved?

Maybe serrated?  What's the coin type?

minimal gewellt = Minimally/slightly wavy, or slightly bent. In other words a coin with any "gewellt" is not completely flat.
All historical inquiry is contingent and provisional, and our own prejudices will in due course come under scrutiny by our successors.

Hi Jay, it's a solidus. N.igma's explanation of wavy certainly makes sense. Gold is soft enough to be wavy. Thanks!
