Byzantine Coin-Jewelry
« on: October 03, 2012, 01:38:29 pm »

Dear List,

This piece of Byzantine coin-jewelry depicts a gold tremissis of Anastasius placed in a decorative (gold) mount added in antiquity. I was wondering if anyone had an idea as to the purpose of the gold mount.  The three loops, two on one side and one on the other, makes it difficult for me to determine.  I've checked a number of Byzantine jewelry references but have not found anything.

Thanks,
John

Maybe it was on some belt or something...

Based on a tremissis I assume it is fairly small - about the size of a solidus overall??

In this case it could have been for a necklace or neck-chain instead of a belt.
