Trajan Sestertius help needed
« on: April 24, 2010, 06:21:26 pm »
Hi everyone, I got this coin for free when I bought my last Alexander drachm.  Trouble is I can't make out the reverse.  I think it is Fortuna but I'm not sure.  I can make out the SC underneath the deity, perhaps on a podium?  I checked my Sear and Wildwinds but when you don't know what the reverse is it makes it difficult.  Any help with this one?  Thanks!

By power of deduction I believe the obverse legend is:

IMP CAES NERVAE TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P COS V PP

Jay, I think it's more interesting than Fortuna, how about this for a match?

Wow!
This one is quite scarce in any grade and you got it FREE?!
I guess the dealer dismissed it as being worthless because of the low grade and because he couldn't easily find a listing for it (it isn't in Wildwinds and I can't find it in my copy of Sear, though it may be there as I only made a cursory search). He should have assumed just the opposite.
Congratulations on this windfall; I am envious.

 :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you!  I'll give the background then!  I bought an Alexander Drachm (Miletos) mint off of a shop. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-54958  The price on the ticket was $89 and I found this Trajan sestertius in a box that is kept behind the counter with mostly junk....price on the ticket was $19 and it simply said Trajan sestertius, grade G, ref "Blank".  I picked it up and asked "Can you do $80 for both?"  He countered with $90.  I said well I have $80 cash on me, I'll have to put the balance on a credit card".  At that he said $80 is fine it's closing time.
So basically I paid $80 for Alexander and got Trajan for free.  I was happy with that, now I'm even happier!  Thanks guys!

Is the reverse legend SPQR OPTIMO PRINCIPI?
