A completely new type!

Gordian III, AD 235-244
AE 18, 3.26g
obv. AV KM ANT - GORDIANOC AVG (AVG ligate)
        Head, laureate, r.
rev. NIK - O - PO / LITWN

ref. a) not in AMNG

      c) this type not in Hristova/Jekov
From the German Forum

Best regards

Varbanov lists three variants (4122-24) based on different obverse inscriptions.
This reverse type is Type 22 in the Prolegomena (link below), the next sections of which (Types 8-23) are being prepared for uploading. I know of at least eight specimens, so it's hardly a great rarity. Here is the reverse of mine.

Not a new type as such, but they've missed the following:

Caracalla,  AD 198-217
AE 18, 2.28g
obv. ΑΥ K M ΑΥ ANTΩ[NIN]
Bust, laureate, draped and cuirassed, r.
rev. [Ν]ΙΚΟΠΟΛ-ITΩN ΠΡΟC Ι
Eros standing facing, head l., holding a down-turned but flaming torch in his r. and a bow in his l.
ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not in Varbanov
      c) not in Hristova/Jekov
rev. known from No.8.14.16.1 (Septimius Severus) and No.8.22.16.4 (Geta Caesar)
      d) Prolegomena Type 9 (illustrated)

I have a second specimen, probably from the same obv. and rev. dies, but I don't at the moment know of any other examples of this coin.

Hi Francis!

Thanks for your contribution. That is now #29 in this list.

The slogan 'A completely new type!' refers only to the catalog of Hristova/Jekov where this type is not listed at all. So it is in no way a statement about the rarity. Sorry that I haven't looked at your work about Eros. This is valid too for the works of Pat Lawrence or Malcolm Megaw. And I have no access to SNG or RPC (except RPC IV online).

Best regards

P.S. (and I apologize if this is off-topic for an "Addenda" thread): The Hristova/Jekov rarity assessments, although more realistic than Varbanov's, are not always very convincing. For example, for the two "Eros with reversed torch and bow" coins that they list, 8.14.16.1 (Septimius Severus) and 8.22.16.4 (Geta Caesar), both rated as "R5" (over 50 specimens known), I know of only 3 and 7 specimens respectively. As well as adding new types to the next edition, they might consider an overhaul of the rarity assessments.

This type for Caracalla is not listed in Hristova/Jekov:

Caracalla Caesar,  AD 195-98
AE 17, 3.29g
obv. M ΑΥ K ANTΩNIN
Bust, bare-headed, draped and cuirassed, r.
rev. ΝΙΚΟΠΟΛITΩN ΠΡΟC Ι
Eros standing l., leaning on a pillar or stele, holding a down-turned but flaming torch
ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not in Varbanov
      c) not in Hristova/Jekov
rev. known from No.8.14.16.7-8 (Septimius Severus)
      d) Prolegomena Type 8 (forthcoming)

This is the only specimen of the coin that I know of at present.

And nor is this one:

Caracalla,  AD 198-217
AE 15, 3.04g
obv. ΑΥ K M A ΑΝΤΩΝΙΝ
Bust, laureate, draped and cuirassed, r.
rev. ΝΙΚΟΠΟΛITΩN ΠΡΟC Ι
Eros standing r., leaning on a pillar or stele, holding a down-turned but flaming torch
ref. a) not in AMNG
      b) not in Varbanov
      c) not in Hristova/Jekov
rev. known from No.8.14.16.9 (Septimius Severus)
      d) Prolegomena Type 8 (forthcoming)

Apart from this one, I know of only one other specimen, a very battered coin offered on eBay a few years ago.

A totally new type!

Septimius Severus, AD 193-211
AE (?)
obv. AV KL CEP - CEVHROC
Bust, draped and cuirassed, laureate, r.
rev. VPA OOINI T[ERTV]LLOV NIKOPOL PROC
Female figure, winged(?), nude to hips, leaning r. on rocks and two big shields, holding
with r. hand big shield on her l. knee, re. arm resting at her r. side.
 ref. a) not in AMNG
       b) not inVarbanov (engl.)

If the figure is actually winged, then it is probably Nike. This seems to be a totally new unpublished type with an unbelievable rev.

A new obv. die for Caracalla

Caracalla, AD 198-217
AE 17, 2.76g
obv. MAR AVR L - ANTWNI
        Bare head, r.
rev. NIKOPOLIT - PROC ICTR
Dionysos, nude, stg. l. with kantharos and thyrsos
ref. a) not in AMNG
          rev. AMNG I/1, 1496
      b) not in Varbanov (engl.)
      c) not in Hristova/Jekov:
          rev. No. 8.18.8.9
obv. seems to be a new one
The L after AVR is obscure. Should it be AVRHL and the H is missed? Or is it actually an A and the beginning of ANTWNIN and the die cutter has repeated the A on the r. side of the head?

New obv. and rev. legends

Commodus, AD 177-192
AE 18, 2.19g
obv. AVT KAI AV - KOMODO
       Head, laureatre, r.
rev. NIKOPOLI - PIOC(sic!) IC

No.8.10.5.1 var. (different obv. legend, different ref. legend)
The pic in H/J is a bit odd. So it is not sure wether it is the same rev. depiction. Especially the position of the r. hand is strange. But the torch makes it surely a Demeter.
