Star of David coins !!
« on: January 19, 2010, 01:19:59 am »
Dear all
Aarmale who is a member of this board , brought to my attention that many members aske about coins that has David star on coins and think they are Judaean or Judaean related.
just to make it clear: there is no Judaean coins type with David star at all, the coins that come with such a star are mostly Islamic coins from north Africa, mostly Morocco.
all the best
Salem

That's a question that comes up and this board about every 4-6 months, there must be a dozen past posts stating that no ancient Judaiac coins have Stars of David.  Don't worry that question will come up  again around May.

I'm not sure of the date when the Jews started using the star of David, or why they did so, but I'm sure it's medieval.

The Star of David has mostly kabalistic orgins, so it must of been Mideval.
The Leningrad Codex, dated 1008 CE, has a Star of David on it, and 12th century Rabbis such as Yehudah Hadassi have commented on the Magen David.

I have heard it speculated that it has moorish influences.  Islamic artwork from Islamic spain used geometric figures to decorate books and such.  Jewish scholarship thrived during this period and may have adopted some of the same use of geometric figures.

Likely.  During the Jewish so-called "Golden Age" they took on many Islamic influences.

With a major centre of Jewish culture in Spain, which was also a centre of Islamic civilisation, and Christian scholars being attracted to the universities, influences were flying in all directions.
