Hi Forum Members,

This is something that is touched on every now and then, but I suggest that it be made a sticky topic (Alex and Joe, are you out there?), since it is always good to know what old and new fellow collectors focus on.

Let's keep all the replies short and to the point. If the collecting area changes or becomes more focused, old replies should be modified to reflect this. I will post a first reply to start the topic off.

I collect countermarked Roman provincial bronzes, although I focus primarily on those coins that have civic rather than imperial countermarks.

My area is broad yet intriguing to me...
I love those tiny control marks in the fields on the coins!  The more the merrier! ;D

If I've got a specialty at all, its the late 3rd Century, but I collect all sorts. Doubtless I'll have a purge one day.

Coins of Faustina II. Condition doesn't matter. If there is an image, I'm happy.

I will happily relieve anyone, if I have the money, of worn Faustina II coins.

That family in general.
Antoninus Pius, Faustina I, Lucilla, Annia Faustina( knock on wood, someday soon  ;D ).

As side interests, One each existing family type from Augustus through the Byzantine era) through uncleans and Gallienus and Salonina through unclean lots.

Unclean lots in general.

But I find ancients interesting in general.

Principally anything minted in Sikyon; also, any Greek silver that catches my eye.

I started off collecting Roman Imperial silver and I'm sure I'll return to this area in the future.

I started collecting coins from the period the Romans ruled in Britain i.e. Claudius to Honorius. Nowadays I collect anything Roman that takes my fancy, usually interesting (to me) reverses and my collection (alas with gaps  :'() now runs from the early struck coins of the republic up to Marcian.

I just got started with my first lot of 100 uncleaned coins. I am a history student at the university of Oregon -- a roman nostalgic first, and a coin collector second. Thus far, I am enduring a patient excitement at the beginning of my coin collecting endeavor. I have not developed a specialty or taste and am open to any advise or wisdom from the members of this board.

I am trying to put together a full silver set of Domitian, first the Augustus issues and later the Caesars ones.   Until now I managed about 10%, mostly rare coins, but I dont know If I'll ever be able to complete it.

1. Marcus Aurelius Probus

2. Anything from sole reign of Gallienus onwards
to pre-reform Diocletian.

3. That "1 coin for every emperor, his wife, his kid, his dead kid
and his pet peacock" thing. Filled out the affordable middle,
and stuck on the un-affordable edges.

Yet, I just feel that I will own an XF Gordian II one day.

4. Hemidrachms of Chersonesus "Where IS that damn peninsula exactly!?"

I also collected Faustina II for a while, but felt that I was not giving
her sufficient time, or budget share, what with Mr. Probus on top of the
stack.

So, she gets no more room in the trays.

Vale,

G/<

I'm into the late Roman stuff aswell (Constantine and family)... Mostly stuff I've cleaned and is at least gVF. Helvetica- I'll look and see if I've got any sitting types. I'm looking to expand into Sev. Alexander Denarii and I'm looking for a fully silvered Probus/Aurelian to start me in that direction.

Looks like we've got most bases covered...

Evan ;)
